Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS, is a chronic pain condition that typically affects one limb, often after an injury or trauma. It is characterized by intense and prolonged pain, usually described as burning, throbbing, or aching. CRPS can cause significant distress and impair the affected individual’s ability to perform daily activities.
Types of CRPS
CRPS is divided into two types:
- CRPS Type 1 (also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD): This type occurs after an injury or trauma that did not directly damage the nerves in the affected limb.
- CRPS Type 2 (also known as Causalgia): This type occurs after a specific nerve injury in the affected limb.

Risk Factors
CRPS can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender, but it is more common in females and often occurs between the ages of 40 and 60. People with certain medical conditions, such as fractures, sprains, nerve injuries, or surgery, may have a higher risk of developing CRPS.
Symptoms of CRPS:
CRPS can manifest with various symptoms, including:
- Continuous, severe burning pain in the affected limb
- Sensitivity to touch or temperature changes
- Swelling and changes in skin temperature (warmer or cooler than the opposite limb)
- Changes in skin color and texture
- Muscle spasms and weakness
- Limited range of motion in the affected limb
Causes of CRPS:
The exact cause of CRPS is not fully understood. It is believed to involve a combination of nerve dysfunction, inflammation, and abnormal blood flow in the affected limb.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosing CRPS involves a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and ruling out other potential causes of the symptoms. Imaging tests, such as X-rays or MRI, and nerve conduction studies may also be performed to support the diagnosis.
